William Franklin “W.F.” Griffin, Sr., 82, of Lee County, GA, died December 5, 2018. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM at Sherwood Baptist Church. Rev. Ken Bevel and Rev. John Spencer will officiate. Interment will follow in Thundering Springs Cemetery.
He was born November 10, 1936 in Baker County, GA to the late William and Mildred Griffin. Mr. Griffin graduated from Baker County High School in 1955 and joined the Georgia National Guard. He moved to Lee County, GA in 1957 where he was a farmer and was employed at the Marine Corps Logistic Base for thirty six years.
Mr. Griffin was extremely active in Lee County including serving two terms as President of the Lee County Chamber of Commerce and for over fifty years served on the board and was the current Chairman of the Tax Assessors for Lee County. He was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and was a former longtime member of Thundering Springs Baptist Church.
Mr. Griffin enjoyed cooking and on many occasions would donate his time and expertise by sponsoring a Fish Fry for charitable organizations. He was preceded in death by a brother, Doug Griffin.
Survivors include his wife, Melvina Griffin of Lee County, GA, his children, Crystal (Mike) Claussen of Greenville, SC and Celinda (Rich) Dennison, Cindy Martins and Frank (Ashley) Griffin all of Lee County, GA, seven grandchildren, Glenn Ellis of Chicago, IL, Haley Martin (Justin) Shiver and Brittny Dennison (Ben) Stein all of Lee County, GA, Griffin Dennison of Athens, GA and Jackson Griffin, Wyatt Griffin and Malory Griffin all of Lee County, GA, three great-grandchildren, Cole Stein, William Shiver and Mellie Stein, his siblings, Lemuel (Linda) Griffin of Albany, GA, Henry (Rita) Griffin of Lee County, GA, Jerry (Carolyn) of Albany, GA, Evelyn (Jerome) Phillips of Newton, GA, Ophelia Newman of Augusta, GA, Carol (Jim) Boyd and Jan Griffin all of Lee County, GA and Bronnie (Cliff) Holton of Camilla, GA, and a sister-in-law, Nan Griffin of Lee County, GA. Survivors also include his special family Jeanne (Stephen) McIntyre, Gabby McIntyre, and Matthew McIntyre.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM Saturday at the Atrium of Sherwood Baptist Church.
