William Whitfield “Whit” Gunnels, III, 53, of Lee County, died Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at his residence.
His funeral service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Mathews Funeral Home with a private entombment to follow at Crown Hill Mausoleum. Rev. Chuck Knight will officiate.
A native and life-long resident of the area, Whit was employed for fourteen years at Molson-Coors as a brewer & professional beer taster. He was a graduate of Oak Hill Academy, Darton College and Albany Technical School, a member of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church and all things garnet and gold, as he was a huge FSU fan.
Whit was an avid disc golfer and loved to play trivia but most of all he was a man of God. Whit ministered often to the homeless and regularly attended the Men’s Bible study on Tuesdays at Porterfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Whitfield Gunnels, Jr. and Imogene Hanson Gunnels, and his father-in-law, Harry Lynn Holton.
Survivors include his wife, Becky Holton Gunnels, son Holton Hendricks (Taylor Whitehurst), mother-in-law Lucy Holton, sister Denise Gunnels (Bobby Lange, Jr.), uncle and aunt Bruce and Katie Sue Gunnels, cousins, Drew Aultman, Bruce Gunnels, Jr. (Tina), Jack Kale (Sandra), Julia Christian, (Bob), and Laura Smith (late Bobby Smith), and aunt, Jean Gunnels Stimpson (late Jim Stimpson).
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Saturday at Mathews Funeral Home.
