Weyman Elmo Rooks, Sr

Weyman Elmo Rooks, Sr. of Baker County died Wednesday December 17, 2014 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday December 19, 2014 at Christ Methodist Church Cemetery in Baker County. Rev. Bobby Moye will officiate.

Mr. Rooks was born in Baker County on November 13, 1920 to the late Warren E. and Doris P. Rooks of the Bethany Community. His forefathers were among the first settlers in the western portion of Baker County in the early 1800's. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Milton P. Rooks and a sister, Ethelyn B. Bryan.

Mr. Rooks attended the University of Georgia where he received a "BSA" degree in 1942. After attending the U. S. Naval training school at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH. He served for four years in the U. S. Navy mostly in the South Pacific during WWII and was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Senior grade. He was employed as an AG teacher in Newton, GA for a few years before being hired by Farmers Home Administration. He worked with FHA until he retired in the early 1970's. Mr. Rooks owned farm and timber land in Baker County and was involved in farming for most of his life. He was a member of Newton Baptist Church.

Survivors include his two sons, Weyman E. Rooks, Jr. and John O. Rooks, Sr., five grandchildren, Weyman E. Rooks, III, Christa M. Rooks, Brett E. Rooks, John O. Rooks, Jr. and Brian S. Rooks, six great-grandchildren, Rachel Rooks, Rebecca Rooks, Atticus Rooks, Sullivan Rooks, Jonathan Miller and Grayson Rooks. Mr. Rooks is also survived by two siblings, Carl M. Rooks and Delores Sowell.
