Watson Edward Meeks, Sr

Watson Edward Meeks, Sr., 90, of Albany, GA, died Monday, February 18, 2013 at his residence. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 AM at Mathews Funeral Home. Dr. John G. Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in Leesburg Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army and the American Legion Post # 30.

A native of Kite, GA, born to the late W.B and Vera Woods Meeks, he graduated from Kite High School and enlisted in the United States Army. Mr. Meeks served during World War II and arrived in Normandy on July 4, 1944 as part of the 83rd Infantry Division who relieved the 101st Airborne Division. Mr. Meeks served 270 days in combat and was a Staff Sergeant and was the leader of a heavy mortar platoon. He participated in five major battles including the Battle of The Bulge and received six medals and ribbons including the Bronze Star.

Mr. Meeks moved to Albany, GA in 1947 from Atlanta, GA and retired from the Carswell Distributing Company. He was also active in Meeks Electric Company from 1964 until 1977 and was a sales representative for the Charles S. Martin Distributing Company. Mr. Meeks was a member of the First Baptist Church of Albany, GA and the American Legion Post # 30.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Walters Meeks of Albany, GA, two children, Watson Edward (Eddy) Meeks, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn and Martha Meeks Whittle and her husband, Len, all of Leesburg, GA, four grandchildren, Adam Meeks and Rebecca Meeks both of Jacksonville, FL, Leah Whittle Eddins and her husband, Bret of Auburn, AL and William Whittle of Savannah, GA. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Meeks, three brothers, Sam Meeks, Emanuel Meeks and Otis Meeks and a sister, Ruth Meeks Kearney.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday at Mathews Funeral Home.
