Wannie Carson Brookerd, 61, of Albany, GA, died Monday, November 4, 2013 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 8, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Dr. Ronald R. Baxley will officiate. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
He was born to the late Roy Carson Brookerd and Margaret Morris Brookerd on December 1, 1951 in Thomasville, GA and moved to Albany, GA with his family when he was ten years old. Wannie married Sharoltte Driver Brookerd in 1971 and they have been together for forty two years. In addition to his parents Wannie was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Brookerd and Roy Ryan Brookerd.
Wannie entered the family concrete finishing business at the age of fifteen. Through his hard work and ambition he very quickly moved on to start his own business, owning and operating Brookerd Concrete Works for more than thirty years and taking great pride in his workmanship and efforts in establishing strong, lifelong relationships with his clients as well as those in the trade.
Wannie was a passionate fisherman, former hunter and golfer. He was an avid participant in numerous tournaments and won many awards. His happiest times were spent bass fishing and golfing with his friends.
Wannie was an extremely compassionate man, generous of heart and spirit never withholding what he might be able to provide to those in need. He loved his family and friends unconditionally demonstrating his generous spirit and willingness to help them whenever needed. Wannie was devoted to causes involving animal rights and his kindness and efforts to aid abandoned animals was well known.
One of his greatest enjoyments was spending time with his friends, whether it was time spent together or talking with them on the telephone, joking around with or sharing stories with them. Wannie was well known for his "Wannie-isms" and his unique laugh, which we all loved.
Wannie was a member of the Albany Seventh Day Adventist Church and his strong faith in the Lord brought him strength during the most difficult of times that he faced. He had felt very blessed by the outpouring of love from his family and friends during his hardships.
Survivors include his wife, Sharlotte Driver Brookerd, Albany, GA, a brother, Warren Brookerd and his family, Cleveland, TN, an aunt, Barbara Cochran, Thomasville, a brother-in-law, Stanley W. Driver and his wife Sandra Driver, Leesburg, GA, his sisters-in-law, Julia Brookerd, Albany, GA and Peggy J. Johnson, Whispering Pines, NC, three nieces, Marsha Chambers, Pam Edwards and Kim Sanders, nephews, Scott Brookerd, Brent Brookerd and Stan Driver, Jr., his grand-niece, Hayley Chambers, grand-nephew, Jackson Driver and other extended family members.
The family will receive friends Thursday, November 7, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.at Mathews Funeral Home.
The family is at the residence of Stan and Sandy Driver, 2777 Palmyra Rd., Leesburg, GA.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
