Walter Winston Ross, 88, (USAF Retired) of Albany, GA was born on April 15, 1931, in Franklinton, NC. He departed this life “to meet his Lord and Savior”, May 5, 2019. Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 12:00 Noon at Andersonville National Cemetery with Military Honors. Rev. Gene Cox will officiate.
Walter was the son of Walter Bland Ross and Maggie Bowes Ross. Walter retired from the United States Air Force after 21 years of service, as a Chief Master Sergeant. He served in both, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued his education, graduating with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Georgia Southwestern College. He was Past Master of Triangle Lodge # 708 F & AM and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Walter’s civilian career included working for the First National Bank, Albany Junior College, the Albany Planning Commission, Personnel Director Palmyra Park Hospital and Personnel Manager for Georgia Federal Saving, from which he retired.
Walter was a fifty year resident of Albany, GA. He was an avid golfer and spent many hours, and rounds, on the golf course at Radium Springs. His volunteer work included Meals on Wheels and membership in the Palmyra Singing Seniors. He was also an active and full-time member of the Hasan Shrine Temple’s volunteer efforts, dedicated to providing care for children and families in need.
By his own account all the above paled in comparison, “to accepting Jesus Christ, as his Lord and Savior.” He became a student of the Bible and a devout Christian. This new calling and passion for the Lord and God’s work resulted in him writing and publishing over 25 booklets and books, which numbered in the thousands. He gave them to friends, family and mostly strangers, with the hope that his efforts, in some small way, would help “bring them to the Lord”. He was a member of Eager Avenue Grace Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Clara Cone Ross, a brother Charles Ross, a sister Grace Ross Woodlief and a stepdaughter Brenda Vick Myers. He is survived by his daughter Pamela L. (Merritt) Ezekiel, Columbus, GA, son Jeffrey W. (Karen) Ross, Abbeville, AL, Grandchildren Lisa L. (Rick) Levy, Dallas, TX, Hubert Davis III ‘Trey’, Jeffersonville, IN, Bridgette (Everett) Cox, Albany, GA, and 6 great grandchildren. He also leaves his very devoted and close friend Carolyn Hayes.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Walter’s memory, to Willson Hospice House, 320 Foundation Ln., Albany, GA 31707 or the Albany Humane Society 1705 Oakridge Dr., Albany, GA 31707.
