Walter D. Mathews, Sr., 79, of Worth Co., GA, died Sunday, November 20, 2016 at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Mr. Ross Powell will officiate. Interment will follow in Floral Memory Gardens.
Born in Valdosta, GA, Mr. Mathews moved to Albany since 1956. He later moved to Lee Co., GA. where he resided until 2004 when he moved to Worth Co., GA. He retired as Captain from the Albany Fire Department serving thirty one years and worked with Winn-Dixie after his retirement. He was a member and deacon of Mercedes Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Jasper Mathews and Elizabeth Dodson Mathews, his first wife, Rosa Jane Swearingen Mathews and a daughter, Cynthia Mathews Cook McDuffie.
Survivors include his wife, Myra Smith Holladay Mathews of Worth Co., GA, three sons, Walter Dodson Mathews, Jr. and Michael Darren Mathews both of Lee Co., GA, Mike Holladay of Worth Co., GA, three daughters, Sonya Dawn Mathews Roberts of Leesburg, GA, Missy Holladay Thompson of Chattanooga, TN and Jennifer Holladay Kraft of Pooler, GA, two brothers, George Mathews of Monroe, GA, Marty Mathews of Panama City, FL, a sister, Julie Bowman of Jacksonville, FL, fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.
Retired and active fireman will serve as honorary pallbearers.
