Verna Elinor Yates, 89, of Albany, GA, died August 16, 2020 at Willson Hospice House. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 20, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Chad Ellis will officiate. Social distancing will be required. A private burial will follow in Singers Glen Cemetery in Singers Glen, VA.
Mrs. Yates was born on December 17, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Carl Edward Flank and Laura Ward Flank. She grew up in Maryland Park, MD and graduated from Maryland Park High School. Mrs. Yates served in the Civil Air Patrol during World War II and was employed with the Machinist Union in Washington, DC.
She met her late husband in church and they resided and raised their family in Oakland, NJ. She was employed with the Christian Research Institute and was a member of Ramapo Valley Baptist Church. Mrs. Yates and her late husband moved to Albany, GA in 1992 to be closer to family where she joined Gillionville Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Pamela Yates Roshio (David) of Albany, GA, Lorie Piel (Donald) of Naperville, IL and Jennifer Lou Yates (Kate Clayton) of Berkley, CA, her grandchildren, Daniel Roshio (Julie) of Lackland AFB, TX, Erin Roshio of Atlanta, GA and Anders Pike of San Marcos, TX and great-grandchildren, Curtis Michael Roshio and Christian Ira Roshio.
There will be a visitation held at Mathews Funeral Home one hour before the funeral service.
