Velma Griffin Fender, 94, of Albany, GA died Monday, December 5, 2016 at Phoebe Sumter Hospital, Americus, GA. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Avalon United Methodist Church. Rev. Debbie Cone will officiate. Interment will follow in Floral Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Born in Dekalb County, TN, on December 1, 1922, she attended Pure Fountain High School in Dekalb County, TN. Mrs. Fender had resided in Albany, GA a number of years. She was retired from Coats and Clark. She was a long time member of Avalon United Methodist Church and was a member of Bands of Gold Sunday School Class and Friendship Sunday School Class. Mrs. Fender enjoyed serving as a volunteer at Palmyra Park Hospital for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents Ira and Lola Blankenship Griffin, her husband William Sidney Fender, a daughter Pam Peters, a son Bill Peters, and a sister Opal Griffin.
Survivors include two step-sons, Greg Fender (Ginger), Statham, GA and Mark Fender, Albany, GA, four grandchildren, Matt Fender and Ethan Fender both of Daphne, AL, Zack Fender (Lacy) Nick Fender all of Albany, GA and a cousin, Joe Wright, McMinnville, TN.
The family will receive friends at Avalon United Methodist Church on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until the funeral hour.
