Stephen H. Gilchrist

Stephen Herbert Gilchrist, 72, of Lee County, GA, died December 20, 2023 at his residence.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at 11:00 am at Mathews Funeral Home.  Ross Powell will officiate.  Interment will follow in Leesburg Cemetery.

Steve was born in Thomaston, GA on March 25, 1951 to Charlie and Mary Gilchrist.  His family moved to North Carolina and then to Albany, GA when Steve was ten.  Steve graduated from Westover High School in 1970.  He had been involved with the family business, Charlie’s Automotive and Wrecker Service, since his teens.

Steve was a member of Christ Church in Albany and was a history buff.  He was musically inclined and played the bass guitar, the piano and could sing.  Steve was a tinkerer and could build or fix almost anything.  After selling his business, he was employed with Quality Wrecker Service and then Oxford Construction Company.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mary Gilchrist.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Gilchrist of Lee County, GA, his children, Clint (Paige) Gilchrist of Albany, GA and Melissa “Missy” (Brent) Williams of Leesburg, GA, a sister, Peggy Gilchrist West of Lee County, GA, five grandchildren, Bailey Gilchrist, Landon Roberts, Deacon Gilchrist, Gambel Gilchrist, Church Gilchrest and one great-grandchild, Bentlee Downs.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 27, 2023 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Mathews Funeral Home.
