S.M. (Sam) Davis, 91, of 2708 W. Doublegate Drive, Albany, GA, died Sunday, September 18, 2011 at his residence. Services will be announced at a later date and he will be interred next to his wife at Riverside Cemetery.
Mr. Davis was born November 21, 1919 in Baker County, GA to the late Bille Marven Davis and Bryan Beecher Davis. He moved with his family to Turner County, GA in 1924 and graduated from Ashburn High School in 1939 and attended The University of Georgia from 1939 until 1943.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in 1944 he began a career in the timber business. In Warwick, GA from 1944 until 1959 he produced pulpwood, logs, cross ties and pilings. In 1960, he and his wife Betty moved to Albany, GA built a hardwood sawmill on the Eight Mile Road in west Dougherty County and began Davis Lumber Company. He operated the sawmill off and on for the next forty five years, retiring in 2007 at the age of 87.
He was preceded in death by his wife of forty eight years, Betty Golden Davis.
