Sarah Tappan King Mitchell

Sarah Tappan King Mitchell (1923 - 2017) passed peacefully from this life into her heavenly home, Friday January 20, 2017. Born in Sandersville, GA and raised in White Plains, GA, she lived in Albany, GA for most of her life. She was a long time member of Byne Memorial Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School and Bible study teacher for many years. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 28 in the chapel of Matthews Funeral Home, 3206 Gillionville Rd., Albany, GA. 31721. Burial will follow in the Floral Memory Gardens Cemetery. Dr. C. Michael Gravette will officiate.

She was the daughter of the late Matthew Howell Tappan and Caroline Goldsmith Tappan of White Plains, GA. She was married to Dr. Charles Baldwin King Jr. For 20 years, and is the widow of James A. Mitchell. She was a charter member of Porterfield Memorial Methodist Church and served as an Adult Sunday School teacher and worked with the youth department.

She retired from General Adjustment Bureau, and as a long-time member of Byne Memorial Baptist Church she then entered into volunteer missions with the Baptist Home Mission Board and served in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Illness brought her back to Albany after 5 years and upon recovery, she became Pastoral Secretary at Byne Baptist church for nearly 10 years. She spent many happy and fulfilling years in service to her Lord, Jesus Christ.

Survivors include a sister, Leila Collins (Mel); twin daughters, Caroline King Yearwood, (Jim); Eloise King Newton, (Percy) and two step sons, Charles Mitchell, (Kim) and Todd Mitchell; Five grandchildren, Flip Plummer, Allyson Marchant, David Plummer, Dan Newton (Julie) and John Newton; nine great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends for 1 hour prior to the 3 p.m. service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Living the Legacy at Byne Memorial Baptist Church, 2832 Ledo Rd., Albany GA 31707.
