Russell Dean Mathis

Russell Dean “Rusty” Mathis, 54, of Lee County, GA, died April 24, 2023 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.  A celebration of life will be held Monday, May 1, 2023 at 11:00 am at Mathews Funeral Home.   

Rusty was born on October 25, 1968 in Albany, GA to Dawson and Patricia Mathis.  He was raised in Albany, GA and graduated from Westover High School in 1987 and graduated from Georgia Southwestern University with a degree in Business Administration. Rusty was employed with Proctor and Gamble and was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, loved fishing, bird-hunting, and was an avid reader.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Craig Mathis. 

Survivors include his wife, Leigh S. Mathis of Lee County, GA, his brothers, Tony (Cynde) Mathis of Jacksonville, FL and Jason (Misty) Mathis of Albany, GA, his step-mother, Cathy Jo Mathis of Nashville, GA, his mother-in-law, Betty Jean Soley of Albany, GA, sister-in-law, Sara (Les) Fields of Covington, LA, brother-in-law, Scott (Evon) Holt of Orange Park, FL, brother-in-law, Keith (Ann) Holt and sister-in-law Lisa Hood all of Jacksonville, FL and a number of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his fur babies and buddies, Knox and Sadie.

The family would like to thank all of the Doctors, Nurses, Technicians, and Chaplain Joey that took such excellent care of Rusty, and Leigh, while he was in the hospital. Thank you doesn't express our gratitude enough. 

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2023 from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Mathews Funeral Home.
