Roy E. Harrell, 80, of Albany, GA, died Sunday, February 16, 2014 at his residence. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:00 PM at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Carl Dunn and Chaplain Rodney Stamey will officiate. Members of the Order of the Eastern Star and Masons will serve as honorary pallbearers. Interment will follow in Floral Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.
He was born, September 17, 1933 in Long Beach, CA, and grew up in Portsmouth, VA. Mr. Harrell served in the United States Air Force for ten years. He resided in Albany, GA since 1960 moving from Virginia, was employed with the Marine Corps Logistic Base as a welding foreman and retired in 1989. After his retirement, Mr. Harrell and his wife, Helen, managed the Virginian Apartments for five years.
He was a charter member of Radium Springs Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts sponsored by the church. Mr. Harrell was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Albany and a fifty year member of, and Past Master of Dougherty Lodge # 591 F&AM.
Mr. Harrell served as Deputy of The Order of The Rainbow Girls for seven years. He was a member and Past Worthy Patron of The Order of The Eastern Star, Crape Myrtle Chapter # 163 of Albany, GA and was a Past Worthy Grand Patron of The Order of The Eastern Star for The State of Georgia.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Darley Harrell of Albany, GA, daughter, Bobbie Busha and her husband, John of Hartwell, GA, two sons, Al Dervan and his wife Pam, and Roy E. Harrell, Jr. (Eddie) all of Albany, GA; two sisters Thelma Sterling and Mary Harrell both of Chesapeake, VA, five brothers, Junius Harrell, Alford Harrell, Carl Harrell, James Harrell, and Edwin Harrell of Portsmouth, VA, six grandchildren, Jared Dervan and his wife Melanie, and Chase Dervan and his wife Jessica, all of Huntsville, AL; Ryan Busha of Cumming, GA, Matthew Busha of Canton, GA, Angie Davis and her husband Pell of Stuttgart, Germany and Amanda Harrell of Albany, GA and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from one hour prior to the service at Mathews Funeral Home.
