Dr. Ronald R. Baxley, of Lee County, GA died Monday, December 8, 2014 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Private services will be conducted.
Born in Albany, GA, Dr. Baxley attended Albany Schools until his father was transferred to Tallahassee, FL where he then attended Leon High School and graduated from Paxon High School in Jacksonville, FL where he was offered a basketball scholarship but turned it down to attend seminary.
Bro. Ron was ordained in 1960 at Westview Baptist Church and after graduation from Luther Rice Seminary he pastored Lakeside Baptist Church, Newton, GA, Roddy Baptist Church, Cochran, GA and Thomas Memorial Baptist Church in Albany, GA. He began Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Albany, GA in 1982 and remained there until his retirement in 2013. After his retirement he returned as a member to Westview Baptist Church where it all began.
He served in the Army, and loved softball and was an avid golfer with three holes in one and his golfing buddy was Bruce Gunnels.
He loved his family and was known to his grandchildren as "uncle Granddaddy" because he said he was too young to be a granddad. First in his life was his love for the Lord and he was truly a wonderful shepherd for his flock. He will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton Martin Baxley and Muriel Marie Mullis Baxley and a son, David Martin Baxley.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Palmer (Cathy) Baxley, Lee Co., GA, a son, Butch Register, Locust Grove, GA, two daughters, Janie Register Parker (Parke), Topeka, KS, Teresa Baxley Miller (Bruce), Leesburg, GA, a sister, Linda Caminez (Jon), Monticello, FL, a nephew, Sam Armstrong (Candace), Birmingham, AL, two great nieces, Addison Armstrong and Anna Armstrong, eight grandchildren, April Ruth, Jon Parker, Morgan Register, Andrew Miller, Haley Register, Sami Baxley, Tiffani Miller and Lauren Miller and four great-grandchildren, Sage Ruth, Dayne Ruth, Cailia Parker and Alaina Parker.
In lieu of flowers those desiring may make memorials to the American Diabetes Foundation, 1701 North Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA, 22311 or a charity of your choice in memory of Dr. Ronald R. Baxley.
