Richard Earl Matheny, Sr., 97, of Albany, died Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
The family will receive friends 5:30 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 1, 2024 at Mathews Funeral Home.
A native of Logan, OH, Mr. Matheny lived in Albany, GA for the last 25 years but was also a resident of Bessemer, AL, Phoenix City, AL and Seacrest Beach, FL for many years throughout his life. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force retiring as a Major, and first served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and later in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Ohio State University with a degree in Ceramic Engineering.
Mr. Matheny worked in the brick manufacturing industry with Bickerstaff and ultimately retiring with Boral Brick after 50 years. Many would say that he was a legend in the brick industry. He was well known and admired in the industry, as he opened and managed many brick plants throughout the U.S.
Mr. Matheny was an avid golfer and loved to play cards. He was also a die-hard Ohio State Buckeyes and Auburn Tiger football fan. In his later life, you could find Mr. Matheny working at the tennis shop or playing cards with friends at the clubhouse of the Stonebridge Country Club and Community.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Ann Roberts Matheny, Albany, GA, son Richard E. Matheny, Jr., Bessemer, AL, granddaughter Nikki Matheny Nunnally (Chris), great grandchildren, Cole Nunnally and Chloe Nunnally, Bessemer, AL, stepson Jeffery K. Culpepper Sr., grandson Jeffery K. Culpepper Jr., Ellaville, GA, stepson Michael L. Culpepper, grandson Carson N. Culpepper, Albany, GA, stepdaughter Kim Culpepper Haggerty (Robert), Lantana, TX, grandsons Tyler M. Cook, New Caney, TX, and Randle D. Haggerty, Lantana, TX.
