Phillip Ray Plummer, Sr, beloved and treasured by family and friends, passed from this life on Saturday, April 6, at Willson Hospice House in Albany following an extended battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 79 years old
A memorial service is planned for Sunday, April 14, at 2pm at First Baptist Church of Albany on Oakland Pkwy. Dr. Wm. E. "Butch" Knight, Mr. Mac Wilcox, and Mr. Julian Whiting will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service.
Phillip was born in Florida and his family relocated to Albany when he was a young boy. He graduated from Albany High School in 1958 and attended North Georgia College in Dahlonega, later transferring to Georgia State University in Atlanta. He was affiliated with the wholesale grocery industry in the state of Georgia for 30 years, holding offices at the local, state and regional levels, receiving numerous awards for service. He and his father owned Albany Brokerage Company and worked together for 25 years.
Phillip never met a stranger, and genuinely loved people and animals, especially his constant little companion, Obie. He had the best sense of humor ever, and was always smiling. He had a servant's heart and his very nature involved him in all aspects of community service. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce and served on numerous boards of charitable organizations working tirelessly for worthy causes. But more times than not, he worked behind the scenes, avoiding public acknowledgement. That was Phillip Plummer.
He had a wonderful gift for teaching and taught Sunday School for much of his adult life, most recently at First Baptist Church of Albany, where he also served as a deacon. He was active in Sertoma Past President's Club until recent years. He loved sports of every kind, but especially UGA football. He was widely known in tennis circles and loved golfing with friends ....and thanks them in advance for their attendance at his service on Master's Sunday.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grayce Plummer, beloved niece, Missi Culross and nephew Wesley Weekley. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Emily DeLong Plummer, children, Phillip,Jr "Flip" (Julia), daughter, Allyson Marchant and her daughters Lane, Lindsey and Laken, son, David (Sarah) and his daughters Melanie and Hannah and great-grandson Corley, stepson, Chip Cross, stepdaughter, Jennifer Collins (Jim) and their children Taylor, Meredyth and Jay, stepson, Clint Cross (Kelly) and their children Charles, Kacey and Reese, siblings, Gene Plummer (Patricia), Linda Mansfield (Tommy), and Cindi Weatherly (Neal). He absolutely adored his nieces and nephews and had a special bond with each that has always been treasured.
The family would like to especially thank Calvin Curry, friend and loyal companion, faithful friends, Patty Woodall and Julian Whiting, and the staff at Wynfield Park Health and Rehab.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Light House at supportphoebe.org/lighthouse, or Team Up Mentoring, P.O.Box 523, Monroe, GA 30655 (wwwteamupmentoring.org).
