Ouida Duncan Standley

Ouida Duncan Standley, 78, passed away surrounded by her family at her home in Sasser, Georgia on July 21, 2022, following a two-year battle with cancer and dementia.

A native of Bogalusa, Louisiana, Ouida was the daughter of Oneida Bennett Duncan and Lester Duncan.  She graduated from Bogalusa High School in 1962 and received her B.S. in Education from Louisiana State University.  After moving to Albany, in 1969, Ouida taught first grade and returned to school to complete her Master’s Degree in Education from Georgia State University in Atlanta.  She taught in the Dougherty County School System for over 30 years, teaching both first and fifth grades at River Road, Martin Luther King, Magnolia Elementary and Raleigh White Christian.  After teaching for over 40 years, Ouida retired in 2009.  After retirement she returned to the classroom as a volunteer to assist another teacher friend with her students.

Education and learning were important to Ouida, and she took every opportunity possible to share knowledge with children whether at school, church, on a field trip to the zoo, or even her home.  She loved reading and could usually be found with a book in her hands.  She also enjoyed fishing, camping, meeting friends for coffee, and getting together with friends and family to laugh and reminisce.

Prior to her illness Ouida was very active in church, volunteering and serving in many areas.  When her children were younger, she, and her husband and son were involved with the Boy Scouts of America.  In 1977 Ouida was awarded one of Scouting’s highest awards, the coveted Silver Beaver Award for outstanding service of exceptional nature to boyhood.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dudley Standley of Sasser, GA, her son Shel Standley and his wife Kay of Sasser, GA and their two children, Sheldon “Drew” Standley and Ashlyn Standley who lovingly referred to her as “Granny”, her daughter Leanette Roberson of Roberta, GA, her brother Earl Duncan and his wife Monica of Tickfaw, LA, many nieces and nephews, and two fur babies, Beauty and Bubbles.

The family wishes to express appreciation to Cassandra Harris, Dianne Goseer and Trisha Buckley for the care and friendship they provided for Ouida over the past year.

Her memorial service will be 10:30 AM Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Floral Memory Gardens.  Mr. Glen Phelps will officiate.
