Myrtle Walters Meeks, 92, of Albany, GA, died July 8, 2016 at Willson Hospice House. Graveside funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday at Leesburg Cemetery. Dr. John Smith will officiate.
A native of Irwin County, GA, Mrs. Meeks was a graduate of Ocilla High School and continued her education at Middle Georgia College and The University of Georgia, graduating with a Bachelor's in Home Economics in 1944. She moved to Albany, GA from Cairo, GA in 1951 where she was employed with the University of Georgia Extension Service.
She left her career to raise her two children and then returned to the work force where she was employed as a Nutritionist with the State of Georgia before retiring in 1989. She was a member of The First Baptist Church of Albany and the Adult Three Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Watson Edward Meeks and a grandson, Matthew Meeks.
Survivors include her children, Watson Edward (Eddy) Meeks, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn and Martha Whittle and her husband, Len all of Lee County, GA, two sisters, Joyce Smith of Cordele, GA and June NeSmith and her husband, Doyle of Lyons, GA, her grandchildren, Adam Meeks and his wife, Shannon of St. Augustine, FL, Rebecca Meeks Harrell and her husband, Alex of Lee County, GA, Leah Whittle Eddins and her husband, Bret of Auburn, AL and William Whittle of Lee County, GA, two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Eddins and Abigail Meeks and a special friend and caregiver, Brenda Williams.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday at Mathews Funeral Home.
