Mollie Ann Hamby, 89, of Albany, GA, passed away October 25, 2023, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Sherwood Baptist Church Chapel. Rev. John Spencer and Mr. Ross Powell will officiate. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Mollie was born on November 20, 1933, in Natchez, MS to Eugene and Annie Carlson. She graduated from Albany High School in 1950. She met and married William “Bill” Hamby in 1952 and traveled with him and her family to various military stations until he retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1969. The same year, she and her family moved from Okinawa, Japan to Albany, GA. She was a homemaker and very active in Sherwood Baptist Church where she was a member of the Encouragers Sunday School class. Mollie volunteered in Sherwood’s preschool and children’s ministry for over forty-five years and visited nursing homes for twenty-five years. She retired from preschool ministry only when she could no longer get down in the floor to play with the little ones.
Mollie was preceded in death by her husband, William Archie Hamby. Survivors include her children, William Glenn Hamby (Karen) of Albany, GA, John Thomas Hamby (Julie) of Jacksonville, FL, and Laura Lea (Robert) Hatcher of Lee County, GA, five grandchildren, Ryan Hatcher, Reid (Sarah) Hatcher, Lea Hatcher, Alex Hamby, Jason Hamby, and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Carolyn Jolly, of Sylvester, GA.
Mollie was a devoted wife, mother, and Grannie to her family. She was only about five feet tall but was a pillar of faith and encouragement with a spunky attitude and independent spirit. She was a tremendous example of humility, grace, loyalty, service to others, and joy in the face of adversity. In better health, she enjoyed serving at church, cooking for her family, walking, and games/puzzles. In declining health, she never lost her joy or her sense of humor. She always enjoyed a laugh with her doctors and caregivers even in tough times. Passing away one day short of her 71st wedding anniversary, she got to spend that day reuniting with her husband in the presence of her Savior.
The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 until the funeral hour in the atrium of Sherwood Baptist Church.
Those desiring may make memorials in memory of Mrs. Hamby to Sherwood Baptist Church, 2201 Whispering Pines Road, Albany, GA 31707.
