Mary Joiner Herman, 89, of Albany, GA, died September 6, 2024 at the Willson Hospice House. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at 11:00 am at Avalon United Methodist Church. Rev. Debbie Cone will officiate. Interment will follow at 2:00 pm at Cook’s Union Methodist Cemetery in Miller County, GA.
Mary was born in Madison, FL to John and Gertrude Joiner on June 18, 1935. She grew up in Miller County, GA and graduated from Miller County High School in 1953. After high school, Mary married James “Jimmy” Cook. and they lived in Miller County for twenty years until his death. She met and married Floyd L. Herman in 1975 and lived the remainder of her life in Albany, GA.
Mary worked in the banking industry for most of her career and retired from First State Bank and Trust Company. She was a longtime, active member of Avalon United Methodist Church and the Bands of Gold, then the Friendship Sunday School Class. Mary was also active in United Methodist Women, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 30, Albany Hemerocallis Society, Flint River Sams Camping Club and Albany Exchange Club. She was known for her love of daylilies and working hard to keep the weeds at bay. In Heaven she will be able to rest; there will be no weeds to tend. She shared her flowers and pound cakes with her friends, family and those confined to their residences.
Survivors include her husband: Floyd L. Herman of Albany, GA: her children: James Monroe Cook of Lee County, GA, Marilyn (Howard) Cunningham of Fairfax, VA, Stephen W. Herman of Albany, GA, Rhonda M. Hoffman of Valdosta, GA; her grandchildren: James M. Cook, Jr, Howard F. Cunningham III, Mary T. (Michael Kitlan) Cunningham, Meaghan A. Hoffman, Makayla L. Hoffman: great grandchildren: Henry J. Cook and Kelly T. Kitlan; her siblings: W.B.”Billy” Joiner, Margaret (Vernon) Linton, Tina Rudd and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and first husband she was preceded in death by her sister Helen Simmons.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 am, until 11:00 am before the service at Avalon United Methodist Church.
