Mary Lou Cobb Beasley, 75, passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2023, following a long battle with cancer. Mary Lou was born April 28, 1948, in Frankfort, KY, to Richard Clifford (R C) and Elizabeth Lucille Cobb.  Mary Lou was raised on a small tobacco farm in Owenton, Kentucky, and was the second oldest of nine children.

Upon graduating with honors from Owen County High School in 1966, Mary Lou enrolled at Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky, and graduated cum laude in 1970 with a BS degree in English Education. While at Cumberland, Mary Lou served as a summer missionary in Wyoming and South Dakota with the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board.

After graduating from Cumberland, Mary Lou enrolled at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and received her Master’s in Religious Education in December, 1972. While at the seminary, Mary Lou met and married Jim Beasley, her husband of fifty-one years.  Mary Lou assisted Jim as he served at churches across the state of Georgia.

In 1989 Mary Lou began working as assistant director of the Darton College Writing Lab and teaching remedial English. She served on the Darton College staff for twenty-five years until her retirement in December, 2014. While on staff at Darton, Mary Lou volunteered with Darton’s Theatre Program. She served as props mistress, costume mistress, and stage managed over fifty shows. Mary Lou continued her passion for theatre at Theatre Albany where she staged managed around fifty shows.

Mary Lou was a member of First Baptist Church of Albany where she sang in the choir, was a member of Baptist Women, and taught the Open Door Sunday School class for over twenty years.

Mary Lou is predeceased by her son, James Patrick and her brother, Richard Cobb. She is survived by husband, Jim; her son, John David; her daughter, Melody Cervantes (David); three granddaughters, Gabriella Cervantes; Daniella Cervantes Larson (Jackson); and Isabella Cervantes; one grandson, Aidan Cervantes. She is also survived by their first greatgrandson, Vance Everette Larson. She is also survived by her siblings: Bruce Cobb (Carolyn); Paul Cobb (Louanne); and Barry Cobb (Tammy); Sarah June Jacobs (Jamie); Cynthia Hall (John); Clarissa Young (Jerry); Paulette Tolbert; and Mollie Brewsaugh. 

Matthews Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements. Family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at 2:00 pm, at First Baptist Church of Albany. Services will be conducted by Rev Butch Knight at First Baptist Church Albany following the visitation time at 3:00 pm.

Memorial gifts may be given In Memory to:  Jubal Ministries Org, the charitable organization started in 2022, to help fund the ongoing ministries of the Sons of Jubal, the Jubalheirs and the Jubal Chorus.  Also gifts may be given to David Martin Fund at FBC, Albany.
