Marvin Dennard Reynolds, 79, of Cordele, GA passed away peacefully at his home, Thursday, August 2, 2012. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Cordele, GA, Monday, August 6, at 4:00 pm. Reception following at the cabin, 362 Lakeshore Drive, Cordele, GA 31015.
Marvin was born in Turner County, GA in 1932. He grew up in Arabi, GA where he finished high school and then graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering and worked with Oxford Construction Company, Albany, GA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Brazeal Reynolds and his son, Michael Marvin Reynolds.
Marvin was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict and then chose to join the Navy and became a pilot, spending most of his career flying aircraft off thirteen different aircraft carriers. He made three combat tours during the Vietnam Conflict. Marvin was awarded the Navy Cross, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, several Air medals and Service Medals. He commanded a tactical air squadron on the USS John F. Kennedy, a Carrier Air Group on the USS Saratoga and was Deputy Chief of Naval Warfare at the Pentagon when he retired from the Navy in 1984. He attained a Masters degree in Mathematics while attending US Navy Post Graduate School, Monterey, CA and a MBA from George Washington University, Washington, DC while attending Armed Forces Industrial College. Marvin became a commercial pilot and flew for nine years
Survivors include two daughters, Laura Burgin of Atlantic Beach, FL, Deborah Monteferrante of Windermere, FL and five grandchildren.
