Martha’s unwavering Christian faith was the heart of her identity. A lifelong follower of Christ, she lived daily grounded in prayer, compassion, and trust in God’s promises. She was a devoted member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, where she found fellowship, purpose, and community. Whether she was attending worship services, serving on the hospitality team, or lifting her family in prayer, her faith never wavered. She often reminded her children and grandchildren that God’s love was constant and sustaining—and her life reflected that truth with grace and humility.
Martha is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Harold Thompson. Their beautiful love story began with a whirlwind romance and led to a heartfelt wedding on June 4, 1954, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Together, they shared a life of devotion and adventure. In Colquitt, Georgia, they co-founded The Tip Top Restaurant, a cherished local gathering spot known for generous catfish plates, homemade Southern comfort food, and heartfelt hospitality. Martha’s kitchen was the restaurant’s soul—just as it was in her home.
Eventually, they settled in Albany, Georgia, where Martha worked for over 37 years at the Marine Corps Logistics Base. There, she was respected for her dedication, warmth, and integrity, building lifelong friendships along the way.
Martha’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her son, Michael (Debra) Thompson of Roswell, and her daughter, Sharon (John) Bentkowski of Albany. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Emily (Joe) Broadway of Grand Prairie, TX, Hannah Kennedy (Cam) of Lynchburg, VA, and Caleb (Yami) Thompson of Buford. She delighted in her great-grandchild, Eliza Kennedy, whose presence brought bright joys. She also shared a loving bond with Michael’s former wife, Cheryl Thompson, whom she considered a daughter.
Known for her deep sense of humor and radiant spirit, Martha brought joy to every room she entered. She loved laughter, good conversation, and friendly teasing. Her faith did not make her somber; it made her joyful.
She was also a gifted cook, famous among family and friends for her sweet red velvet cakes, delicious pound cakes, and legendary Thanksgiving dressing. Her meals were a form of love—shared generously and with joy. In her quiet hours, she enjoyed puzzles, Sudoku, and the game of Pinochle, where her sharp mind and love of strategy shone brightly.
Martha’s life was a living testimony to God’s grace. Her presence was a steady beacon of faith, kindness, and unconditional love. Her prayers, her wisdom, and her example will echo through generations.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at First Free Will Baptist Church in Albany on Saturday, March 29, at 11:00 AM. Family, friends, and loved ones will gather to remember and honor a life so beautifully and faithfully lived. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, and graveside services will follow the Celebration of Life.
Martha will be deeply missed, but her memory will never fade. Her love and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
