Martha Dorman Cooper Phillips, 86, of 736 Airport Rd., Smithville, GA, died Saturday August 6, 2011 at Palmyra Medical Center in Albany, GA. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday August 9, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Smithville United Methodist Church. Dr. Leonard L. Dupree and Rev. Cecilia Hurley will officiate.
A native of Clayton, AL, Mrs. Phillips had resided in Smithville, GA since 1939. She retired as the Lee County Clerk of Superior Court in 1993. She was a member of Smithville United Methodist Church where she was very active, having taught Sunday school and was a member of the WMU. Her yard was her passion and was where she spent as much time as she could. She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Cooper and Vernon Andrew Phillips.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Johnson, Leesburg, GA, Beverly Chambers (Eldon), Smithville, GA, Emily Dupree (Ronnie), Americus, GA, son-in-law, Derryl Johnson, Lee Co., GA, two brother-in-laws, Kelly Sprouse, Americus, GA, Joe Pittman, Benevolence, GA, two-sister-in-laws, Virginia Hanlon, Haverstraw, NY, Janelle Pittman, Benevolence, GA, grandchildren, James Johnson (Terri), Gregory Johnson (Michelle), Vernon Chambers (Kristin), Ashley Chambers (Amy), Sarah Harris (Linton), Joey Dupree (Michelle) and Phillip Dupree, twelve great-grandchildren and a special friend, Mamie Woodard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
