Martha Fleming Holloway

Martha Fleming Holloway of Albany, Georgia passed away peacefully on October 16, 2024 at her residence at the age of 85.

A native of Tifton, Georgia, Martha was the middle child of Dr. Carlton and Virginia Fleming. She was preceded in death my her parents and sister, Virginia “Honey” Ivey. She is survived by her husband James Barrow “Jimmy” Holloway to whom she was married for 64 years and her children Jimbo Holloway and wife, Pam, of Santa Rosa Beach, FL and Kate Grubb and husband, Ned of Albany, GA. She is also survived by a brother, Carlton “Brother” Fleming and his wife, Helene, of Lake Blackshear, GA and five special grandchildren, Barrow, Katherine and William Holloway and James and Carlton Grubb. Her love extended to a host of nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Tift County High School, Martha earned a teaching degree from the University of Georgia. While at UGA she was an active member of the Phi Mu Sorority. In 1960 Martha married Jimmy Holloway and began their life together in Atlanta where she started her teaching career. After moving to Albany Martha taught at Magnolia and Sherwood elementary schools before she retired. She was a member of Porterfield Methodist Church, the Junior League of Albany and the Highlands Garden Club.

With their children almost grown, Martha and Jimmy bought an Albany institution, Morrow-Cook Home Furnishings. It was during those years that Martha’s natural talent as an interior decorator prospered. One notable project for which she was very proud was decorating and furnishing Phoebe’s first “Light House,” a home away from home for cancer patients. Martha was simply a master at creating beautiful spaces, where she loved mixing her collection of antiques with treasures found during hours of plundering and searching for just the right-priced bargain!

Though the Holloways called Albany home, they loved sharing their places in Highlands and Santa Rosa Beach with family and friends. Nothing made Martha happier than hosting house parties, dinner parties and setting gorgeous tables filled with dishes of the best southern food she prepared. She knew how to throw a good party-Martha Stewart had nothing on this Martha!

From an early age Martha loved animals and that continued throughout her life namely with favorite dogs “Puddin” and “Dewar.” She loved to tell about Uncle Murray Fleming taking her horseback riding at Wildfair Plantation on many occasions. Those who knew Martha best knew she was very tender-hearted. Tears came quickly and often if she was touched by something happy or sad. She cared deeply and it showed.

Jimmy, Jimbo and Kate wish to acknowledge Martha’s best friend, companion and housekeeper of many years, Ciller Roberts. If you knew Martha, you knew Ciller and the important role she played in Martha’s life. Over the last thirteen months the family was blessed with loving care given to Martha by Deborah Roe, Alfredo Shelton and Lucille Smith, not to mention the daily visits by her sister-in-law, Sandra Hancock.

Those desiring may make memorials in memory of Martha to Willson Hospice House, 320 Foundation Lane, Albany, GA 31707 or to The Albany Humane Society, 1705 W. Oakridge Dr., Albany, GA 31707.
