Martha Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson

Martha Elizabeth “Betty” Johnson, 78, of Leesburg, GA, died September 29, 2022 at her residence.  Funeral services will be held Monday, October 3, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church.  Rev. Mark Spraggins will officiate.  Interment will follow in Leesburg Cemetery.

Betty was born on July 15, 1944 in Americus, GA to James and Martha Cooper.  She grew up in Smithville all of her life and graduated from Lee County High School in 1962.  Betty served on the Lee County Commission for four years, was employed with Beulah Forrester for nine years before being elected as the Lee County Tax Commissioner and serving for twenty-eight years.

Betty was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and the Faith Sunday School Class.  She was also a member of the Georgia Association of Tax Officials and County Commissioner’s Association.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Vernon Phillips, her mother, Martha Phillips, a grandson, Allen Johnson and a son, James Johnson.

Survivors include her son, Greg (Michelle) Johnson of Parkersburg, WV, her daughter-in-law, Terri Johnson of Worth County, GA, her grandchildren, J.D. (K.K.) Johnson of Newton, GA, Grey (Cameryn) Johnson, of Racine, OH, Joshua Johnson, of Parkersburg, WV, Haley E. Johnson of Greenwood, SC, two great-grandchildren, Ella James Johnson and Skylar Elizabeth Johnson, her sisters, Beverly (Eldon) Chambers of Smithville, GA and Emily (Ronnie) Dupree of Americus, step-grandchildren, Wesley (Nuria) Taylor of Brooksville, FL, and Justin Taylor of Worth County, GA, and her previous husband, Derryl (Paula) Johnson of Albany, GA.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. before the service at Friendship Baptist Church.
