Mabel Hazel aka “Nanny” of Camilla, GA died peacefully at her home, February 9th, 2025 at the age of 85. Mabel loved her family above all else especially her great-grandchildren. Born, June 3, 1939, one of seven children raised on her family’s farm in Mitchell County by her parents, James J. Martin and Minnie Lee Martin. “Humble beginnings that shaped her generous spirit”. They may not have had much but there was a lot of love! Mabel was a force to be reckoned with.
Anyone who knew her knew what an outstanding work ethic she had and loved making things beautiful. She had a long career as an interior decorator employed with Suburban Furniture and then in later years with Brooks Furniture. She was always full of spunk and always dressed to the nines, “The more sparkle the better”. There was nothing she couldn’t do when she set her mind to it. Very generous to many and our “Queen” for 85 years. She was loved by many and will be eternally missed.
Pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, Tommy W. Hazel, Sr., her sisters: Mary Alice Butler, Janice Gummel, and Sylvia Tyson and her brother, Leland Martin. Survived by her children: Rebecca H. Dunn and Tommy W. Hazel, Jr. and Grandchildren: Paige M. Dunn, Richard R. Dunn, Jr and T.W. Hazel III. Brothers: Freddie Martin and Grady Martin. Beloved nieces and nephews: Sherry Shiver, Merry Cox, Lee Martin (all who made it possible and a constant help to her so she could stay in her home as she grew older). Robin Hayes and her children, who she claimed as her own grandchildren, Jan Leyse, Cindy Beckham, Jamie Martin, Stacy Butler, Paul Gummel and his sister, Anne. Great-Grandchildren: Michael Brier, Hayes and Carrington Elizabeth Hayes aka “Little Mable”.
