Lucy Martha Gurr Yarbrough, 92, of Albany, GA died April 30, 2015 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 AM May 4, 2015 at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Charlie Brown will officiate with Rev. Steve Williams and Rev. Charles Jones assisting. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Yarbrough was born on December 18, 1922 in Dooly County where she lived until she was almost two. At that time her family made Albany, GA their permanent home. She attended Dougherty County Schools and graduated from Albany High School in 1938 where she played Varsity Basketball. She married Grady Paul Yarbrough, Sr. on her birthday that same year and was married almost seventy-two years until Grady Paul died on December 3, 2010.
Mrs. Yarbrough dedicated her life to her family. She took great pleasure in cooking wonderful meals and was always a great southern hostess. Mrs. Yarbrough loved flowers, enjoyed sewing, teaching, playing games, telling jokes and believed laughter is good for the soul. She loved her family dearly (her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews).
Her house and pool was always open to provide great lessons, delicious food, and fun. She made many wonderful memories for everyone and was loved dearly by her family. Most important of all, Mrs. Yarbrough taught her family to keep Jesus Christ the center of their life. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Albany where she had previously enjoyed working with pre-school Sunday School classes.
Survivors include one son, Grady Paul Yarbrough, Jr., and his wife, Joan of League City, TX, one daughter, Jane Y. Aldridge and her husband, Tommy of Albany, GA, one grandson, Grady Paul Yarbrough, III and his wife, Lisa of Seabrook, TX, five granddaughters, Lee Y. Nix and her husband, Barclay of Woodlands, TX, A. Joy Yarbrough of League City, TX, Marla A. Banks and her husband, Billy of Canton, GA, Marcy J. Aldridge and Maria D. Aldridge both of Albany, GA, two great-grandchildren, Jaci Nix and Evan Banks, a sister, Catherine G. Anderson of St. Simons, Ga, a brother, Harold Gurr and his wife, Connie of Kennesaw, GA and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Paul Yarbrough, Sr., her parents, Robert Moses Gurr and Thelma Jones Gurr, sisters, Lula Lawhorne, Helen Wade, and Lizzie Cannon; brothers, Billy Gurr and Lonnie Gurr.
The family is at the residence of Jane and Tom Aldridge, 3305 Fulmer Drive, Albany, GA 31721.
Visitation will be held at Mathews Funeral Home from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Sunday.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to "Living the Legacy" or Whiz Kids Tutoring Program at Byne Memorial Baptist Church or to the Children's Ministries at First Baptist Church of Albany.
