Lucinda Davidson Hudson, 76, of Sylvester, Georgia departed this life, surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at Baptist South Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Lucinda, affectionately called “Cindy” by many, was born on October 14, 1948 to Lucius M. and Corene W. Davidson. She was her parent’s “miracle baby” after two miscarriages and fertility struggles. A few years later in 1951, her little brother, Paul was born. Lucinda’s parents were very social and had entrepreneurial spirits. Her father owned a funeral home for a brief time, moved houses, paved driveways, cleared land, operated a construction business, dug ponds and septic tanks while her mother owned and operated her own beauty salon. Extra help was needed in their home to care for Lucinda and Paul, which is when a lovely woman by the name of Sarah Jane Williams entered their lives. Sarah Jane was called “Little Bit” by her family, but was affectionately dubbed “Bee” by Lucinda and Paul. Bee was small in stature, but she was a powerful force in Lucinda’s life, a second, faithful mother figure. Bee was with the Davidson family for many years and was even known by Lucinda’s children.
Lucinda enjoyed growing up in Sylvester. She spent many days and evenings socializing with friends at Biguns Drive Inn. Lucinda was a member of Pinson United Methodist Church where she was baptized. She graduated from Worth County High School, Class of 1967. After high school, Lucinda attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, GA. In 1968, she married the love of her life, Larry Hudson. Lucinda gave birth to her son, Ashley in 1968 and her daughter, Casey, in 1972. Lucinda was extremely close with her mother and they visited daily. They considered each other’s homes an extension of their own.
Lucinda enjoyed working at the Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS) in Sylvester for many years. The DFACS office was a place of comradery yielding lifelong friendships and confidants. The DFACS ladies were regularly seen together after work hours, participating in community events, jazzercise and aerobics classes and what seemed like every “fad” diet plan that came their way. They supported each other by attending baby showers, weddings, funerals and parties. They turned work into fun! After years of working at DFACS, Lucinda became an Investigator of Fraud and Abuse for the State of Georgia. She continued to excel professionally and made many more friendships as she traveled all over the state for her career.
As her children grew up, Lucinda was interested in whatever they were interested in. Lucinda and her mother enjoyed shopping trips to Albany and visiting with extended family in Moultrie, GA. She enjoyed traveling, photography, gardening, reading, movies, arts and crafts and family gatherings. When she got her first computer in the late 1990’s, she began researching genealogy. She spent countless hours roaming around cemeteries, interviewing family members and documenting all of it. She made extraordinary progress in the Davidson, Watson and Hudson family trees.
Lucinda retired from the State of Georgia in 2007 after her first grandchild was born. She was blessed with a total of three loving grandchildren, which kept her busy traveling to visit and help raise them. She would pack up and drive down to see them at the drop of a hat. She would always say “if you need me, just call and I’ll jump on my broom and fly down!”. When she was not visiting grandchildren, Lucinda was a very involved member of The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) chapter in Sylvester. Lucinda loved her retirement years and often joked that she now owned more pajamas than street clothes since she no longer had to go to the office!
The last two years of Lucinda’s life were spent in the memory care unit at Starling of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. She made many new friends there and was adored by the staff. Lucinda was known at Starling as the true southern belle with her hair and makeup in perfect order—always. She had several “one liners” that still live on with the staff of Starling. Any time they asked her how she was doing, she would respond “old, tired and decrepit, how about you?’. Lucinda was a lifelong Christian, washed in the blood of the lamb. She experienced many trials and tribulations during her charming life. Her battle with dementia displayed her physical strength and intelligence. She was very aware of her condition until the end and she has exchanged her trophies for a crown.
In addition to her parents, Lucinda was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Larry Hudson. Her beloved “Bee” for whom Lucinda placed a headstone and slab over her grave as a final act of gratitude.
She is survived by her son, Ashley V. Hudson of Brunswick, GA, her daughter, Angela Camille “Casey” Hudson Taylor and son-in-law, Ryan, grandchildren Sydney Corene, Samuel and Hudson Taylor all of St. Augustine, FL, her brother and sister -in-law Paul and Susan Davidson of Sylvester. Lucinda is also survived by sister-in-laws, Barbara Hudson of Sylvester, Linda Kirk of Panama City Beach, FL, brother and sister-in-law Rock and Lisa Hudson of Sylvester and many nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 from 4:00-6:00 pm at Isabella Baptist Church in Sylvester. A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at 11:00 am at Hillcrest Cemetery in Sylvester, GA. Dr. Jason Jones will officiate.
