Lloyd Eugene “Gene” Smith, Jr of Americus, Ga recently of Albany, Ga died April 26, 2023, at his home at Magnolia Manor. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, May 2 at 2:00 pm at Walden Chapel of First Methodist Church, Albany. Rev Jim Morrow will officiate, and Rev. Larry Cochran will deliver the eulogy. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus, Ga.

Gene was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the late Lloyd Eugene and Dorothy Martin Smith, Sr. on November 18, 1941. He graduated from Baylor School; a National Defense Cadet Corps College Preparatory school in 1959. He went on to GA Tech as a cooperative plan student working alternate quarters with Dupont Nylon plant in Chattanooga, graduating with a chemical engineering degree in 1964; the same year he married Jane. While at tech he joined advanced ROTC which required 2 years of service in the Army Chemical Corps after graduation. Gene served his enlisted time at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. He worked for DuPont for 15 years in Tennessee & Delaware, before moving to Albany, Ga in 1977 to work for Merck & Co.

Gene and his family were charter members of Christ United Methodist Church and then joined 1^st Methodist Albany. He was active in choir, teaching Sunday School, and serving with mission teams using his many repair skills to assist after natural disasters and in poverty-stricken areas.

Survivors include his wife, Jane F. Smith of Americus, GA, a son, Brian Smith of Marietta, GA, a daughter, Laura Kemp (Uel) of Canton, GA, a sister, Claudia Smith Oldenburg (Dr. Douglas) of Davidson, NC, three grandchildren, Kristen Young (Case), Joshua Valentine and Ashley Smith, and three great grandchildren, Marty Valentine, Silas Valentine, and Noah Young.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service in the Parlor of the First Methodist Church.
