Jordan “Jakie” Algerine Phillips, Jr., 83, of Albany, GA passed away at Willson Hospice House on Thursday, February 28, 2019. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 4, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Byne Memorial Baptist Church. Rev. Charlie Brown and Dr. Duane Logsdon will officiate. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Born November 5, 1935 in Tarrytown, GA to Jordan “Jake” Algerine Phillips, Sr. and Wilma Daughtry Phillips, Jakie graduated from Montgomery High School in 1953, Brewton Parker College in 1955 and Georgia Southern University in 1958. It was at Georgia Southern that he met the love of his life, his wife of almost sixty years, Harriet McGowan Phillips. After completing his education, Jakie served in the US Army. He taught physical science and physics at Albany Junior High School and Albany High School for thirty-eight years, retiring in 1996.
Jakie was an avid gardener, growing flowers, vegetables, and fruit, which he enjoyed sharing with others. He enjoyed working on his farm in Tarrytown, GA, cooking, photography, and spending time with his family. He was a long-time member of Byne Memorial Baptist Church and loved his Sunday School class.
Survivors include his wife, Harriet McGowan Phillips, Albany, GA, two sons, Phillip David Phillips, Albany, GA, Gary Jordan Phillips and daughter-in-law, Caren Clower Phillips, Leesburg, GA, sister, Sylvia Phillips Hathcock (Johnny), Macon, GA, brothers-in-law, Bill McGowan (Charlene), Dan McGowan (Jan), sister-in-law, Virginia McGowan Wilson (Pat), all of Americus, GA, nephews, Mike Hathcock, Bill Hathcock, Babe McGowan, Harry McGowan, John Wilson, Bryan Wilson, Michael Wilson, nieces, Cindy Hathcock, Karen Hathcock Carter, Amy McGowan Addison, Maggie McGowan Davis, Molly McGowan, and a number of great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Byne Memorial Baptist Church.
