John F. Miller, 91, of Albany, went to be with the Lord early Friday morning, May 3, 2019, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. A graveside funeral service honoring Mr. Miller will be held on Monday, May 6, 2019, at 11:00 at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Georgia with Pastor Anna Miller officiating.
Born March 5, 1928 in Ozark, Alabama, Mr. Miller had been a resident of Albany, Georgia for over 60 years, moving to Albany from Sylvester, Georgia and was of the Methodist faith. In the 1940’s, Mr. Miller worked with his father to run a logging and saw mill operation for 20 years in southern Alabama and southwest Georgia. In 1951, he began his service in the U. S. Army, and was honorably discharged in 1956. He returned home to go back to work with his father in the logging business. After the logging business was closed, he worked over 20 years as an insurance agent in Albany and surrounding areas before retiring in 1985 due to health reasons.
His hobbies included musical talent that began at age 5, when he taught himself how to play fiddle and later guitar. Early on, he performed with his mother and two brothers around the southern Alabama area and even played on a radio show on WOOF-AM in the Dothan area as The Miller Family. Later, he had a successful side career playing fiddle with several bands at VFW’s and square dances over the years in southern Alabama and southwestern Georgia and was well known for his musical ability. He was also very talented mechanically and loved to work on old cars and trucks to restore them. He loved building things and was talented in both construction and woodworking, and he loved Alabama football.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Annette, of 62 years, and his only child, daughter Janet Miller Hayes and her husband Hank of Albany. He is also survived by a sister, Robynel Harden of Columbus, a niece and a nephew.
Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his parents, John R. and Junie Miller, sister, Geraldine Chalker, and brothers Miles Miller and Mickey Miller.
The family will receive friends Sunday, May 5, 2019 from 2:00 to 3:00 PM at Mathews Funeral Home.
