John Joseph Carney

John J. Carney 95, of Albany Ga. passed away peacefully Saturday, September 28, 2024 at his residence with family by his side.

Born in Coshocton, OH, on October 14, 1928, Mr. Carney was a graduate from Ohio University in 1957 and held a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He later moved to Albany, Ga in 1968 with his wife, Joanne Carney, where they raised their family of 4 children. Early in life, Mr. Carney served 2 years in the US Army, 18 months of which were spent in Japan and the front lines of Korea. He was a dedicated employee of Firestone as a Mechanical Engineer, retiring in 1986 after 29 years. Mr. Carney then spent another 5 years with Albany Marine Base before retiring from there in 1991. He was an active member of the Albany Kiwanis Club, the American Legion, Friends of the Parks of Chehaw, the Albany Symphony, Theater of Albany and Albany Museum of Arts. He volunteered at Phoebe Memorial Hospital for 20 years, as well as many organizations that he served along side his wife, Joanne Carney. Mr. Carney was also a member of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church.

John Carney was a dedicated and loving father of 4 children, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Anyone who knew him knew how deeply proud he was of his family, and how well he loved them. He was loved within the community that he served selflessly, and was one who never met a stranger. John Carney was a treasure to those who knew him and loved him, and he had a gift for making everyone feel just as treasured. To say he will be missed is a deep understatement, but his family is in peace knowing he is in the Kingdom of Heaven with his wife who he missed deeply.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Joanne Carney; father: Wayne Carney; mother: Thelma Carney, Grandson: Ryan Carney and Son-n-law: Carl Roos.

Survivors include: Jeffery Carney(Pauline), Stephen Carney, Linda Carney, Alicia Roos; Grandchildren: Christine  Tapley (Matt), Angela Roos and Jonathan Carney; Great Grandchildren; Caroline Tapley and Claire Tapley. 

 The family will receive friends Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.
