Jesse F. Piland, 95, of Albany, GA, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Palmyra Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM at the chapel of Sherwood Baptist Church. Ross Powell and Rev. Tom Pollock will officiate. Interment will follow at Floral Memory Gardens Cemetery.

A native of Pelham, GA, Mr. Piland graduated from Pelham High School, where he was a star football player and graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1949.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Navy aboard the destroyer, USS Russell DD414. The Russell engaged in 16 major battles with no fatalities on their ship.

Mr. Piland was employed with the State of Georgia’s Department of Human Resources for thirty five years. He worked in Statesboro, GA, Macon, GA, Moultrie, GA and moved to Albany, GA in 1969. He retired as District Director of Environmental Health for fourteen counties. He was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church and The Bereans Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy P. Piland of Albany, GA, two daughters, Eileen (Necdet) Tascioglu and Claudia (Glenn) Thomas all of Albany, GA a sister, Vivian Chambless of Pelham, GA, a granddaughter, Cara Young of Los Angeles, CA and a grandson, Ashley Coates of Albany, GA.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Sherwood Baptist Church.
