Jean Pipkin Settles, 83, of Albany, GA, died Wednesday August 8, 2012 at Phoebe North Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Sunday August 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Dr. Matthews Nance and Rev. Charles Jones will officiate. Interment will follow at Colomokee Baptist Church Cemetery, Blakely, GA.
Jean was born August 23, 1928 to the late Fred and Eva Pipkin of the Colomokee community near Blakely, GA in Early County. She grew up on the family farm. She graduated from Blakely High School in 1945 and remained close to her classmates, with a class reunion once a year. Jean attended Georgia State College for women and retired from Dougherty County Family and Children Service.
She was a member of Byne Memorial Church, attended the Faith Sunday School Class and was a member of many organizations and reunion class with her many friends and acquaintances. Jean was preceded by her husband, John C. Settles, a daughter, Joy Settles Gay, a grandson, Kyle Settles and a brother John Andrew Pipkin. Jean is survived by her four children, Brenda (Steve) Geer, Jan Fleming, Carl Settles all of Albany, GA and Fred Settles of Kennesaw, GA, four grandchildren, Sally (Ryan) Boyd, Forrest Gay, Todd Fleming and Stephen Geer and a great-grandchild, Skyler Gay, a sister, Sara (O.H.) King of Blakely, GA and many nieces, nephews and cousins from a close family which still had a Pipkin family reunion once a year.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until funeral time at Mathews Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence of Brenda and Steve Geer, 2010 Old Dominion Road, Albany, GA 31721.
