James A. (Jimmy) Bridges, Sr., 77, of Sasser, GA, died Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Wallace Willis will officiate. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.
A native of Albany, GA, born to the late A.M. and Etta Flowers Bridges, he attended Albany Schools and served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict where he served on two nuclear submarines, the USS Washington and the USS Lafayette.
Mr. Bridges moved to Sasser, GA in 1963 and was employed as a maintenance supervisor at the Marine Corps Logistic Base in Albany, GA. During his career he worked additional jobs at the Terrell County Hospital and was a vocational instructor at Lee State Prison and worked hard to provide for his family. He was a member of Sasser Baptist Church and the P. T. Schley Lodge # 229 F & AM in Dawson, GA.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Sue Bridges of Sasser, GA, two daughters, Sandy Alderman and her husband, Gary of Orange Park, FL and Susan Apperson and her husband, Ray of Georgetown, GA, two sons, Jimmy Bridges, Jr. and his wife, Cindy of Lee County and Jeff Bridges of Atlanta, GA, seven grandchildren, Michelle Kenerly and her husband, Tony of Fleming Island, FL, John Alderman and his wife, Tara of Parrish, FL, Larry Willis of Bridgeboro, GA, Daniel Willis and his wife, Melissa of Albany, GA, Ariel Steedley and her husband, T.J. of Lee County, GA, Sarah Bridges of Americus, GA and Anna Bridges of Lee County, GA, a brother-in-law, Fera Cloud of Blakely, GA and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Betty Cloud, Mrie Shores and Jackie Wilkerson.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Mathews Funeral Home.
