Jack Thornton, 81, of Albany, Ga died Friday, February 13, 2015 at the Calhoun County Nursing Home in Edison, Ga. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 16, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Byne Memorial Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Morgan Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Charlie Brown will officiate.
Jack was born in Morgan, GA and graduated from Morgan High School in 1950. After graduating from High School, he attended Mercer University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Economics. He was a member of the ATO fraternity. After graduating from college, he married Frankie Tennille from Leary, Ga and went to work for the State of Georgia in the Revenue Department as an Auditor. He received many awards and accommodations during his career. Jack retired in 1983 after 29 years. After retiring from the State of Georgia, he was the bookkeeper for his longtime friend Dr. Don Bush, DVM.
He was a dedicated husband who just celebrated 60 years of marriage. He was also a loving Father who always made it a priority to spend time with his sons. Jack enjoyed the outdoors and loved quail hunting. He was an excellent dog trainer and a very good wing shot as well. He also enjoyed fishing the creeks and ponds of South Georgia as well. Jack was an avid reader and especially liked reading about history or researching his genealogy. He was also very involved in his local Sons of Confederate Veterans camp. He was the Adjunct for the camp for over 20 years and worked very hard on the establishment of the Confederate Memorial Park. Jack was a member of Byne Memorial Baptist Church for over 53 years and was currently in the Andrew and Peter Sunday School class. He was preceded in death by his parents H.E Thornton and Ruth Cosby Thornton, two sons, Gerald Thornton and Richard Thornton and his father-in-law and his mother-in-law, Johnnie Tennille and Avis Griffin Tennille.
Survivors include his wife, Frankie Tennille Thornton , a son Tommy Thornton and his wife Kelly all of Albany, GA, three grandchildren, Nicole Var, Amanda Smith and James Thornton and four great grandchildren, Nolan Var, Caroline Smith, Natalie Var and Maggie Smith
The family will receive friends Monday, February 16, 2015 one hour prior to the service at Byne Memorial Baptist Church.
