He grew up in the Cement and Tuttle, OK areas and left home at the age of 15. He traveled extensively in his early yearsand never met a stranger. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, just as his father was. He served in the U.S. Army (1946-47) as a surgical tech in Korea. While he was overseas, he began writing to the sister of an Army friend. Upon his return, he married his penpal sweetheart in Dothan, AL. Virginia Bradley and I.H. were married for 65 years and had three children. They moved to Georgia in 1954, where he worked at the Marine Corps Supply Center for 24 years. He was ordained in 1965 and was a passionate and dedicated follower of Jesus. He returned to Shawnee, OK after his wife's death in 2011, and was able to more easily attend events on the Citizen Potawatomi Nation reservation, where he was proudly a part of the tribal roll. Adding to the enduring terms others called him (Pops, Papa, Daddy, I.H., Ike), he was named "Wejose" posthumously, meaning "He who walks with Him" in Potawatomi. His lifetime ensured he witnessed the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, two World Wars, Civil Rights Movement, Great Space Race, and many other historical events. But his personal legacy of honesty, and genuine nature will also include over 300 original poems and fond memories of him skillfully entertaining others with his guitar-playing and singing.
