Howard Washington Gillis, 85, of Albany, GA, died Sunday, October 2, 2011 at his residence. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:00 PM at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Walter Flint will officiate. Interment will follow in Floral Memory Gardens Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
A native Wheeler County, GA, Mr. Gillis had resided in Albany, GA since 1952 moving from Houston, TX. He served in the US Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II and served in US Air Force during the Korean War.
Mr. Gillis was a retired Warehouse Foreman at the Marine Corps Logistic Base in Albany, GA and was a Protestant by faith. He was a fifty year and emeritus member of Dougherty Lodge # 591 F&AM, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Hasan Shrine Center. Mr. Gillis was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #1285 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars # 2785. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne L. Gillis in 1983 and his daughter, Sharon Erhart.
Survivors include, a granddaughter, Leighanna Collins Lashley and her husband, Terry of Albany, GA, two grandsons, Charles Erhart, Jr. (Howard Hall) and Ronald Myers, both of Dothan, AL, ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM at Mathews Funeral Home.
