Hiram "Sonny" Lofton, Jr.

Hiram A. “Sonny” Lofton, Jr., 76, of Albany, died Monday, December 23, 2024, at his residence. 

His funeral service will be Friday, 3:00 PM at Crown Hill Cemetery.  Mr. Ross Powell and Mr. Steve Preston will officiate. 

Born, raised and a life-long resident of Albany, Sonny was best known to the community from his years spent in radio as on-air talent primarily on WALG 1590. In addition to “spinning discs,” for several years he covered local high school football games on radio as well. In the mid-1970s to early 80s, he took on the role of assistant warden at the Worth County Correctional Institute in Sylvester, Georgia, before moving on to the Dougherty County Superior Court. In the late 1980s, he brought his talents to Albany State University, serving as the Sports Information Director and later as a public relations representative for a local cable company. 

Sonny often reminisced about his childhood at Broad Avenue Elementary School, sharing warm stories about his favorite friends, beloved teachers, and the principal who made an impact on his life. His high school days at Albany High were equally memorable, where he enjoyed playing the drums in the band and sprinting on the track team. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hal Lofton and Christine [Lofton] Ward. 

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Lisa Murchison Lofton, daughter Lindy Lofton Hall (Christopher), grandchildren, Thomas, Tyler and Tucker Leanza, mother-in-law, Betty Murchison, sister-in-law, Tori Christe.
