Gerald D. Smith, 82, of Leesburg, GA, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at his residence. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 29, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Mathews Funeral Home, Rev. Bruce Smith will officiate. Interment will follow at Thundering Springs Cemetery.
Born in Bainbridge, GA, Mr. Smith graduated from high school and joined the United States Army and served during the Korean War. He moved to Opa-locka, FL where he lived for many years before moving to Albany, GA in 1969. Mr. Smith lived in Albany, GA until 1980 and returned to Florida to live in Apopka, FL. He moved to Leesburg, GA in 2006. He was a driver for Bowman Transportation where he was employed for almost thirty years.
Survivors include his wife of fifty seven years, Ruth Addington Smith of Leesburg, GA, his daughters, Caryl Huiras and her husband, Richard of Leesburg, GA, Patricia Smith Violett of Lakeland, FL, Judith Nell (Judi) Smith of Clearwater Beach, FL and Daphne Hunt and her husband, Rodney of Chalmette, LA, a son Gerald (Jerry) Smith Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Leesburg, GA, a brother Rex Smith and his wife, Ann of Barney, GA, seven grandchildren, Robert Lipford, Christian Violett, Christy Wingate Carter and her husband, Patrick, Richard B. Huiras, Jr., Nicole Huiras Bush and her husband Alan, Victoria Smith and Gregory Peck, seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremy “Todd” Smith, a brother Roy Smith, and a sister Nell Pollock.
The family will receive friends Thursday, March 28, 2013, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Mathews Funeral Home.
