Freddie Griffeth Wellborn saw his Savior face to face on Sunday, December 17, 2023. Born on January 5, 1942, in Walton County, Georgia, he grew up working on the farm and exploring the woods around him. His love for nature led him to the University of Georgia where he graduated with a degree in Forestry Management. He then felt called by God to ministry where he graduated with a degree in Theology from Atlanta Christian College. He married his college sweetheart, Wendy, and they were happily married for over 55 years.
Freddie worked in the forestry business originally for the Georgia State Forestry Commission where he was the first shade tree forester in the city of Atlanta. He then went on to work in several counties across Georgia with the state and then started his own successful forestry consultant business.
In addition to working in forestry, he did both full-time and part-time ministry work. He started the First Christian Church of Dalton, GA and was a founding member of Albany Christian Church. Over the years he went wherever the Lord needed him taking him to various Christian churches in southwest Georgia.
After he retired, he continued to serve the community in multiple capacities. He preached at various nursing homes in town – most recently serving at Viva Senior Living. He also was a Phoebe volunteer with RAMP - building wheelchair ramps for seniors. Up until his passing, he served as Pastor to Senior Adults at Move Christian Church where he also led Bible studies and prayer groups. Even while serving in these various capacities, he was also a devoted caregiver for his wife for many years.
Freddie had an adventurous spirit and filled every moment with laughter and love. He loved to travel with his wife and over the years they were blessed to have visited many different places. He was a great storyteller and would have you laughing when hearing some of his crazier life moments. Freddie also known as “Poppy” adored spending time with his three grandchildren.
Most importantly, Freddie had a passion for teaching those who did not know the Lord. He made a lasting impact in many lives through his compassionate ministry sharing hope and encouragement to others. He loved his church family and his friends dearly.
Freddie was loved by everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed by all.
Surviving Freddie are his two daughters, Dawn Wellborn (David) and Beth Foray (Andrew); three grandchildren, Ashton Fagg (Jon), Grayson Robbins and Christian Foray; his sister Mary Frances Wellborn; and his faithful companion for 15 years – his dog Mocha.
Freddie was preceded in death by his wife Wendy and his parents Fred & Linnell Wellborn.
