Faye Sweat

Faye Hamilton Sweat, 94, died Monday, November 4, 2024, in Albany, GA.  

Born in Athens, GA, to parents Robert and Zealure Mae Hamilton, Faye grew up a devoted member of the United Methodist Church, where she often shared her musical talents. After high school, she studied voice at Georgia State College for Women and the University of Georgia, performing at both as a soloist in the A Capella Choir. Faye was also invited to take private voice lessons with noted singer and choral director Herman Gunter and to study at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. Faye served as the choir director for Young Harris Memorial Methodist Church in Athens, GA, Avalon Methodist Church in Albany, GA, and St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Albany, GA. She also performed as a soloist at numerous churches in Georgia, with the Albany Community Chorus, and with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra.  

For most of her professional career, Faye worked as a high school teacher. She retired from Monroe Comprehensive High School in Dougherty County in 1993. She was active in the Albany community as a member of both the Dougherty County Medical Auxiliary and the Dougherty County Genealogical Society. Faye was also a long-standing member of Porterfield United Methodist Church.  

Interested in genealogy, Faye spent countless hours researching and collecting family history. She was also an avid crossword puzzle fanatic and loved to read.  

Faye is survived by her five children: Maxwell (Lori) Sweat III, Linda Fletcher, Helen (late Michael) MacGregor, Anne (late William) Baker, and Marsha Capp. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  

Faye was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Maxwell James Sweat, Jr.  

The family will hold a private service on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
