Evangeline Mayes Matthews, 87, of Albany, GA. died Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Willson Hospice House, as a result of acute myeloid leukemia.
Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her parents, Roberta Cardell Mayes and Joseph E. Mayes, Sr., her mother-in-law, Delilah Kirkland Matthews, son-in-law Ralph Joseph Evans, III, brother and sister-in-law, Joseph E. Mayes, Jr. and Virginia Osborn Mayes, brother and sister-in-law, Herman Lamar Matthews and Elizabeth Collins Matthews, and a brother-in-law, John R. Westbury, III.
She is survived by her husband of sixty three years, Walter Robert Matthews, her daughter, Barbara Anne Matthews, her sister, Elizabeth Mayes Westbury, sister-in-law, Lisa Williams Matthews, and several nieces and nephews, Cathie Mayes Hudson and her husband Hugh, Mary Mayes Jordan and her husband Thomas, John Rush Westbury IV and his wife Sue, Edmond Paul Westbury and his wife Nancy, Charles Lesley Jordan and his wife Katherine, Benjamin Mayes Jordan, John Rush Westbury V. and his wife Tracey, William David Westbury, Meagan Westbury and Bailey Westbury.
Mrs. Mathews attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville receiving a degree in business administration. She taught at Smyrna High School and at Southern Business University in Atlanta prior to moving to Albany in 1958. She taught at Albany Junior High School and McIntosh Junior High School before retiring in 1979.
Following her retirement from the school system, Mrs. Matthews worked with the family business, Albany Title Company, as a title abstractor and a residential appraiser. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Albany for over 50 years. During this time, she served in most areas of the church service including director of mission work, a Sunday school teacher, and as pianist for senior adults. Her most rewarding experiences were being involved with mission work through the church's Womens' Missionary Union.
A visitation will be held at Mathews Funeral Home Friday, October 4, 2013 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Her body has been cremated and a private service will held at a later date.
