Elward Matthews, 89, of Newton, GA, died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at Willson Hospice House in Albany, GA. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, December 23, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery, Newton, GA. Rev. Robert Lewis, Sr. and Mr. Jim Barker will officiate.
A native of Pelham, GA, Mr. Matthews had resided in Newton, GA. all of his adult life. He was a WW II veteran serving in the Army and serving in the Philippines, a retired farmer and he was retired from civil service at the MCLB. He was an Emeritus member of Masonic Lodge # 128 F & AM, the Order of The Eastern Star Crepe Myrtle Chapter # 163 and a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Hilburn Matthews, Newton, GA, a son, Elward A. (Eddie) Matthews, Newton, GA, a daughter and her husband, Charlotte Matthews Shiver and Jimmy, Newton, GA, four grandchildren, Timmy Shiver, Brenda Horton, Jim Shiver, Kyle Matthews, four great-grandchildren, Brittany Horton, Tiffany Horton, Amber Horton, Dakota Shiver and a number of nieces and nephews.
