Elizabeth Stevens Welch, daughter of Ed Stevens and Carolyn Mott Stevens, died peacefully February 10, 2018 one week short of her 104th birthday. She was surrounded by three generations of her loving family as well as her faithful and very dear caregiver, Comfort Sambola. In college, Elizabeth was asked what her ambition in life was. She answered, “To be some good man’s wife.” She exceeded her wildest dreams by becoming the wife of three very good men. All of her husbands loved her dearly and she adored each of them throughout their time together. Elizabeth spent the first sixty-five years of her life in Dawson, GA. When she was not traveling the world with her first husband, Matthew Williams, she was very involved in the community, Dawson Methodist Church, and was voted “Mother of the Year”, twice. After Matthew died, Elizabeth was very instrumental in the day to day operations and management of the family business, Stevens Industries, until it was sold in 1979. In that same year, she married John Copeland and moved to Atlanta. They lived very happily until his death dancing, traveling, playing bridge, and spending time with their friends. Following John’s death, Elizabeth met and married Robert “Bob” Welch. Elizabeth and Bob spent almost twenty very happy and fulfilling years at Lenbrook Square. They enjoyed dancing, playing bridge and making many new friends. Elizabeth is survived by three of her four children: Carol Caldwell, her husband Jimmy and their children Lisa Henley and Jimmy Caldwell and their children; Betty Brewer, her husband Conrad and their children Conrad Brewer, Ray Brewer, Mary Elizabeth Maggard and their children; Matthew Williams Jr. his wife Rosa Marta and his children Slade Nicolay and Matthew Williams III and their children; and her daughter-in-law Charlene Williams and her child Steve Williams. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her three beloved husbands Matthew Williams, John Copeland, and Robert Welch, as well as her son Steve Williams and her granddaughter Susan Brewer Bruce. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at Lenbrook Square in Atlanta, GA, Saturday, February 17th at 11:00 am on what would have been her 104th birthday. Graveside service will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Dawson, GA, Monday, February 19th at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Dawson United Methodist Church, 306 Stonewall Street N.E., Dawson, GA, 39842 or make a donation to your favorite charity. Rejoice!
