Eley Cappleman Frazer, III, 91, of Albany, GA died Monday, January 29, 2018 at Phoebe Sumter Hospital, Americus, GA. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Albany, GA. Dr. William D. “Biff” Coker will officiate. Interment will be Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. CST in Lafayette, AL at Lebanon Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Born in LaFayette, AL and raised on a 60-acre cotton farm, Eley spent his summers in Lacrosse, Florida with his grandparents. After high school he joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served during WWII in the Pacific Theater on an LST carrying ammunition and troops. After the war, he graduated from the University of Florida School of Forestry and married Betty Gene Scott in 1951. While still an undergraduate, he owned and operated a logging business that he continued for four years after his graduation. From 1954-57 he served as manager of the Blackwater River State Forest. Then he began a five-year period as an Assistant Unit Forester for the Georgia lands of St. Joe Paper Company.
In 1962 Eley co-founded and became Operating Partner of F & W Forestry Services became President in 1967 and Chairman of the Board in 1988. Today, F & W operates 15 offices in nine southern states. During his career Eley served as a major officer in numerous professional and business organizations, testified in forestry issues many times before Congressional Committees, and became a recognized expert in rural real estate and forest appraisal. He was an active church member, serving as an Elder, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher. He was a former Scout Master and was awarded the Silver Beaver after serving in many leadership positions within the Chehaw Council. He was an active member and past President of the Albany YMCA He was preceded in death by his parents, Eley Cappleman Frazer, Jr. and Carolyn Belle Weeks Frazer, his wife, Betty Scott Frazer and a grandson, David Spooner Frazer.
Survivors include a son, Eley Dantzler Frazer (Dale), two daughters, Miriam Frazer Howard (David) and Connell Gene Frazer, grandchildren, James Hunnicutt Frazer, Emily Margaret Brown (Seth), Benjamin Forrest Rawlins, Alexandra Byron Frazer, Sarah Elizabeth Frazer, Scott Dantzler Frazer, great-grandson, Frazer James Brown, a brother, William Russell Frazer and a sister Dantzler Frazer Lewallen.
The family give a special thanks to the staff at Magnolia Manor, Americus, and private caregivers, Brenda Musgrove, Tessie Pickett, Pamela Klias, and Belle Pickett for their loving care during his advanced years.
