Dr. Walter Glenn Merritt, 75, of Albany GA, died Monday, November 28, 2016 at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 2, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at Sherwood Baptist Church Chapel. Dr. Michael Catt and Rev. Tom Pollock will officiate. Interment will follow at Salem Memorial Gardens Cemetery (1142 Salem Church Road), Tifton, GA, 31793.
Born in TyTy, GA, Dr. Merritt resided in Albany, GA since 1971. He earned his doctorate in physics from the University of Alabama. While studying at the university, he met his wife Nancy, and they were married for over 46 yrs.
He worked with NASA and assisted with the development of the first lunar rover. Dr. Merritt loved to teach and dedicated four decades to teaching as a Professor of Physics and Physical Science at Darton College.
He was an active member of Sherwood Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday school for forty years. He was also involved with the Gideons International ministry.
He loved his family and had a passion for helping others. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Carole Weathers Merritt and a son, Shawn Merritt (Melissa) all of Albany, GA, a daughter, Stefanie Merritt Feltner (Kerry), Honolulu, HI, four brothers, Marvin E. Merritt, Gotha, FL, Freddie R. Merritt, Eddie E. Merritt, and John I. Merritt all of Eustis, FL and six grandchildren, Kaleb, Kellan, Kinley, Molly, Michael and Charlie.
Dr. Walter Merritt was preceded in death by his brothers Jimmie P. Merritt and Dennis "Mickey" V. Merritt.
