Dr. Herb Leon Hood, 83, died Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 10, at 4:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Albany. A visitation will be held Sunday, September 10, at the sanctuary one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Thad Haywood, Rev. Jeff Hood, and Rev. Junior Peeples will officiate the memorial service. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Herb was born on May 13, 1934 in Anderson, Indiana to the late Arthur Hood and the late Ida Pettit Hood. He attended Anderson High School in Anderson, Indiana and played football, baseball, ran track and was a basketball star. He attended Perdue University where he played basketball and was a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine. He did an internship at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, GA and completed his residency at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Later he moved to Albany and was a partner of the Albany Anesthesiology Associates. He worked with this medical group for forty years before retiring. He served his county honorably in the United States Army and was a physician during the Vietnam War from 1966-1967. He was a member of the Catholic faith and attended St. Teresa’s Catholic Church. He was very active in several different organizations for many years. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and looked forward to their visits. His interests included reading, farming, fishing and hunting both raccoons and mushrooms. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Constance Shmalo, a brother Ted Hood, and an infant daughter, Valerie Hood. Herb is survived by his wife, Mary Peeples Hood, sons, Hollis (Tina) Hood of Albany, GA, Ted (Pam) Hood of Chocawinity, NC, Jeff (Peggy) Hood of Seymore, IN, Travis Hood of Albany, GA, daughters, Heather (Mike) Johnson of Leesburg, GA, Sheryl (Dan) Tremain of Anderson, IN, Kim (Tony) Hobbs of Cumming, GA, Laurie Melissa (Gill Nurques) Hood of Albany, GA, Melanie Hood of Albany, GA, his sister, Wanda (Jim) Ice of Anderson, IN and brother-in-law, Joe Shmalo of Highlands, NC, seventeen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
